Who You’ll Work With
The Power Applications team focuses on generating collateral to help customers adopt our technology. In that regard, the internship will involve extensive time in the lab doing hands on experimentation followed up with data analysis and documentation. The Intern will be working on a project that entails the following:
For higher power applications, multiple lower current devices need to be paralleled to achieve the desired current levels for an application. Due to the fact that there is some natural variability in power devices, it is expected that not all paralleled devices will share this current equally. Over the course of the internship, you will
- research and understand where device variability comes from and how much variance can be expected
- characterize the relationship between the parameter variability and its impact on static and dynamic mismatch
- select a matching criteria to optimize sharing
- validate the matching criteria in a 300 kW inverter utilizing state of the art electrical and thermal characterization equipment
- collaborate with the team create customer facing application notes to aid customers who need to parallel multiple devices

You will be working as part of the Security team, helping to manage project duties in relation to the Security and Emergency Management group.
- Represent department in project planning/coordination meetings
- Identify need for components, raise concern for items otherwise overlooked
- Provide internal stakeholders with a single point of contact for department
- Participate in managing department involvement for projects across enterprise
- Security system components (CCTV, access control, door hardware, etc.) and emergency management items (AEDs, HAZMAT provisions, radio equipment, etc.)

As an intern, you will be running evaluations of process changes tied to Automotive XLamp product development to improve performance, improve robustness, and/or reduce the cost of our products. You will also run select evaluations of new materials, processing methodology changes and/or tooling changes against key product performance metrics and reliability hammer tests. The goal will be for you to learn how to evaluate product performance and robustness relative to process changes. The resulting summaries of your initial testing will be used for down-selection to reduce options to best candidates for full evaluation. You will also be running full performance and reliability testing, and will be responsible for a final report with recommendations will tie the evaluations together.

As an intern, you will work with experienced RF design and test engineers to design and analyze GaN MMICs for various applications, including power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, gain blocks and solid-state switches. Analyze and compare various topologies through simulation using Keysight ADS or NI Microwave Office. Simulate and model the performance of various integrated components, including transistors, passive matching elements, and transmission line elements. Become familiar with methods to characterize and evaluate these components for use in RF circuit design. Come away with a better understanding of the intricacies of RF circuit design and the tools used to create successful RF products.

- Investigating nonlinear power device behavior
- Laboratory RF power device measurements
- Extraction of measurement data into RF simulation software such as NI AWR or Keysight ADS.
- Data analysis to examine parameters of interest
- Developing algorithm flow chartsto extract parameters of interest
- Post-processing measured data including noise
- Implementing algorithms including file handling (text, excel), visualization(XY plots, Smith chart)
- Developing DOE application for device or technology development decision making
- Improving code robustness and versatility for multiple bench application and various practices
- Improving user interface for productive data process and automated reporting

- Electrical magnetic (EM) finite element simulation;
- HEMT device modeling;
- Scripting HFSS simulation models for power transistor and power amplifier with visual basic or iron Python language.
- EM evaluation of amplifier package and transistor performance;
- Transistor modeling with EM/TCAD tools.
You will have opportunities to learn RF power amplifier basic theories and RF/microwave power transistor fundamentals.
