Job Description

Cree is looking for a Senior Staff Electrical Engineer to serve in a technical leadership position, responsible for leading electrical and system integration activities to develop and commercialize complex LED lighting solutions.  The individual would have responsibility for working cross-functionally with marketing, engineering and manufacturing to research, develop, design, qualify and introduce component and integrated component products and systems into production.  Specifically, this position will be responsible for the design of electronics hardware following good engineering practices and applicable standards.  Additional responsibilities will include support of product introduction, on-site technical support, development of new approaches to LED drivers, mentoring of junior engineers, participation in design reviews and detailed problem solving for all products. A successful candidate will be a resourceful problem solver who is able to work around technical obstacles and will be adept at the implementation of practical solutions.

What can you do for Cree? 

  • Responsible for technical oversight on all in house Cree electronic designs.  Assure technical excellence through peer reviews and adherence to design processes.
  • Lead, teach and mentor in all aspects of power supply design including topology selection and architecture, magnetic design, loss calculation and measurement, power device selection, EMI filter design and feedback control loops.
  • Evaluate existing procedures and best practices, determine any gaps and implement improvements.
  • Serve as the go to technical resource for tough to solve, high profile design challenges.
  • Provide technical guidance to senior management during roadmap discussions, product tradeoffs and for any critical technical challenge facing the business.
  • Establish and drive design rigor and adherence to the Cree design process to ensure that new electronic solutions meet the performance specification, cost target and lifetime requirements.
  • Provide high-level insight at design reviews and into difficult problems across all active projects.
  • Identify and implement solutions for process/product development that improves performance, reduces cost, strengthens yield, and increases capability.
  • Provide and facilitate training to other personnel to improve overall capabilities and knowledge.
  • Work across company functional organizations to ensure project success and develop next generation products.
  • Lead and drive the organization using widely accepted quality techniques such as the 8D problem solving, 5 Whys, Kaizen events, etc.

What you need for success:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s PhD in a technical field such as Electrical Engineering and/or suitable work experience.
  • 10+ years’ experience in power electronic design with working knowledge in high frequency magnetic design, control, topology selection and simulation.
  • Demonstrated and proven ability to lead power electronics product development teams in a fast-paced, cost driven industry.
  • Capable at working across and influencing at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrate external partnering skills, networking and influencing skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues clearly to the rest of the organization, including peers on other engineering teams and senior managers.
  • Strong technical background in electronic device performance and passive components.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-sufficient while managing multiple projects, tasks and individual contributors.
  • Ability and desire to mentor members of the power electronics team.

Highly preferred skills and certifications (Preferred Qualifications, still quantifiable):

  • PhD in a technical field such as Electrical Engineering and/or suitable work experience.
  • 15+ years’ experience in power electronic design with working knowledge in high frequency magnetic design, control, topology selection and simulation.
